It runs from the machine to your wand and tools, carrying suction to the cleaning end while stretching to give you reach around a work area. A hose is the part most likely to crack, kink, or clog with heavy use, and any of those faults bleeds off suction before it reaches the floor. A split cuff or pinhole leak is easy to miss but noticeably weakens pickup.
