He was a sergeant and only 25 years old while with the Flugzeugfhrer when he won the Luftwaffe honor goblet for aerial warfare in 1944. He won the German cross in gold during the same year. He was awarded the Knights Cross for flying into the Budapest pocket with a Fi 156
