The adapter has female 3 4" 5 threads that screw directly to the pole. A removable 1 4" 20 screw on top of the adapter then lets you attach accessories such as ball heads, quick releases, and flash shoes. You can replace the top screw with the provided 5 8" male pin to support items like light fixtures that have a 5 8"
